TerraSync turns a TNAS into a private synchronization server. Under TOS 7, the client is integrated into TNAS PC for Windows, macOS, and Linux. This guide covers setup, team folders, conflicts, and why sync is not the same as backup.
How TerraSync works
TerraSync Server runs on the NAS. TNAS PC connects each computer and creates tasks between a local folder and a personal or team folder on the TNAS. Changes can travel one way or both ways.
A team folder publishes a shared location to approved users. Personal folders isolate each account’s data.
- Upload only: the computer sends changes to the NAS.
- Download only: the NAS distributes a copy to the computer.
- Two-way: either side can change files.
TOS 7 requirements
Install TerraSync Server from App Center and TNAS PC on each client. For certain cross-network connections, TerraMaster specifies server 2.1.515 or later, TNAS PC 5.2.510 or later, and TOS 7. Always confirm current requirements.
Create a separate account for each person and grant access only to required folders. Do not use the administrator account in desktop clients.
Create a safe sync task
Choose a dedicated local folder, a NAS destination, and a direction. Test with disposable files before enabling deletion propagation. Exclude caches, virtual machines, temporary data, and libraries that other applications keep open.
Use simple names and avoid excessively long paths. On laptops, test network changes and sleep behavior.
Conflicts and version history
A conflict occurs when the same file changes at both ends before synchronization. Decide which side is authoritative and inspect conflict copies rather than deleting them automatically.
Btrfs snapshots and scheduled backups can recover earlier states. TerraSync quickly distributes changes—including deletion and malicious encryption—so it requires separate protection.
Synchronization keeps folders aligned. Backup preserves a recoverable history. They solve different problems.
Remote access and security
Never open the NAS management port to the internet. Use TNAS.online with its protections, a VPN, or a private network. Enable MFA, updates, automatic blocking, and valid certificates.
For off-site sync, limit bandwidth and encrypt client devices. A stolen laptop may contain a full local copy.
Troubleshooting
If a task stalls, check space, permissions, system time, invalid names, and software versions. For remote connections, verify DNS or VPN and confirm TerraSync Server is active.
When duplicates appear, pause the job before reorganizing folders. Copy the conflicted set and resume only after choosing the correct version.
Verdict
TerraSync is useful for keeping working files available across computers without placing them in a public cloud. Deploy it with separate accounts, snapshots, and an independent backup that can undo propagated mistakes.
