Vega OS is Amazon’s new operating system for Fire TV Sticks. It uses Linux components, replaces the Android foundation found in Fire OS, and runs apps built specifically for Vega. The 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Select was the first model, followed by the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD.
What is Vega OS?
Fire TV players traditionally used Fire OS, Amazon’s Android-based platform. That foundation allowed developers to adapt Android apps and let users install compatible APK packages on supported devices.
Vega OS still uses Linux components, but it is not Android. Amazon designed it for streaming players and other devices with tighter control over the operating system, apps, and hardware. The Home screen still feels like Fire TV; the difference becomes clear when you look for apps that previously depended on Android.
Developers can use React Native for Vega, web technologies, and Amazon’s own tools. Vega development builds use compatible packages such as VPKG rather than Android APK files.

This table covers the most relevant streaming players, although regional variants can exist. Amazon says future Fire TV Sticks, beginning with 4K Select, will use Vega. The company also describes itself as a multi-OS business and continues to support Fire OS. That does not mean every older Fire TV will be converted to Vega by a software update.

Can Vega OS install APK files?
No. An APK contains an app built for Android, and Vega OS does not provide the Android runtime it needs. Renaming a file, downloading it through a browser, or revealing a developer menu cannot convert the package.
Vega does have Developer Mode, but it is intended for registered professionals testing Vega apps with Amazon’s tools. It can install Vega development packages, not Android APKs. Our guide to installing unknown apps on Fire TV explains which devices still support APK files.
Apps you can use
Amazon launched Vega with major entertainment platforms, including Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and Apple TV. More providers have released native versions since then. Max lists Vega OS 1 or later as supported, while VPN providers including NordVPN and Surfshark now offer Vega apps.
Availability changes by country and over time. An app’s presence on Fire OS does not guarantee a Vega version, and US availability does not prove that it is in another country’s Appstore. The safest check is to search Amazon Appstore on the device and confirm support on the provider’s official website.
Downloader, Kodi, Stremio, and Android apps
Downloader was useful on Fire OS because it handed an APK to Android’s package installer. On Vega, downloading a file would not make the operating system understand it. The same limitation affects the Android versions of Kodi, Stremio, SmartTube, TiviMate, and VLC.
That does not mean a service can never arrive on Vega. Its developer can build a new version and publish it in Amazon Appstore. Jellyfin, for example, confirmed in May 2026 that a Vega client had entered the prototype stage. “The APK does not run” and “the service will never be available” are two different claims.
How to identify your Fire TV operating system
- Open the Settings gear.
- Select My Fire TV or Device & Software.
- Open About.
- Note the full device name and software version.
If the screen shows Vega OS 1.x, do not follow APK or ADB instructions. If it shows Fire OS, verify the exact generation before installing anything.
Is Vega OS better or worse?
It depends on what you expect. Someone who only uses official streaming services may appreciate Vega’s simple, responsive experience. Anyone who relies on Kodi, Android apps, custom launchers, ADB, or tools absent from Appstore will find a compatible Fire OS or Google TV device more flexible.

Will my current Fire TV be upgraded to Vega OS?
Amazon has not announced a universal migration for existing Fire TV devices. It continues to support Fire OS while launching Vega on new models. Do not assume an operating-system replacement without a model-specific announcement.
Can I install Google Play Store?
No. Google Play is built for Android, and Vega OS is not Android.
Can Developer Mode install Kodi?
No. Developer Mode installs and tests authorized Vega applications, not Android APK packages.
Should I return a Vega Fire TV?
Only if it lacks a feature that is essential to you. Check your regular services first. If you bought it specifically for APKs, Kodi, or Downloader, a compatible Fire OS or Google TV device will be a better fit.
