How to Import Utility Energy Data into Home Assistant in the United States

The United States does not have one nationwide platform equivalent to Spain’s Datadis. Each utility decides how customers can access smart-meter data and how much detail it provides. Even so, many US households can import official utility usage into Home Assistant through Opower, an integration included with Home Assistant. If the utility is not supported, Green Button is the next option to investigate.

This guide, verified on August 4, 2026, explains how to choose the correct route, configure Opower step by step, add its statistics to the Energy dashboard, and evaluate the realistic alternatives when your provider is not listed.

Important: utility data is not real-time energy monitoring. Providers usually release it with a delay of around 48 hours, and some updates can take several days.

Option 1: import utility data with Opower

Opower is an official integration included with Home Assistant. It does not require HACS or YAML configuration. More than 175 utilities use Oracle Opower, but Home Assistant currently supports only a subset of them.

  • American Electric Power (AEP): AEP Ohio, AEP Texas, Appalachian Power, Indiana Michigan Power, Kentucky Power, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, and Southwestern Electric Power Company.
  • Burbank Water and Power.
  • City of Austin Utilities.
  • Consolidated Edison: ConEd and Orange & Rockland Utilities.
  • Duquesne Light Company.
  • Evergy.
  • Eversource.
  • Exelon: Atlantic City Electric, Baltimore Gas and Electric, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO, and Pepco.
  • Glendale Water and Power.
  • National Grid US: Massachusetts, New York Long Island, New York Metro, and New York Upstate.
  • NIPSCO.
  • Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).
  • Portland General Electric.
  • Puget Sound Energy.
  • Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD).

Support can change. Before configuring the integration, check the current utility list in Home Assistant’s official documentation.

Before installing Opower

  1. Create an online account with your utility if you do not already have one.
  2. Sign in to the utility portal and confirm that you can open its energy or usage section.
  3. Verify that readings are already visible there. Home Assistant cannot retrieve data the utility has not published yet.
  4. Have your username, password, and the utility’s multi-factor authentication method ready.

You will normally use the same credentials as the utility website. Burbank Water and Power is an exception: customers must first create an account on its dedicated Opower portal.

Install and configure Opower step by step

  1. Open Home Assistant.
  2. Go to Settings > Devices & services.
  3. Select Add Integration.
  4. Search for Opower.
  5. Select your utility from the list.
  6. Enter your utility account credentials.
  7. Complete any additional authentication requested by the provider.
  8. Finish the setup flow and allow time for the first data import.

The first synchronization can take time. When the utility provides enough detail, Home Assistant can retrieve monthly history since account activation, daily usage and cost for up to three years, and hourly usage and cost for the previous two months. Not every provider supplies every data type.

Utility-specific authentication notes

  • ConEd: the account must use TOTP. Home Assistant asks for the TOTP secret, not the temporary six-digit code. This secret can generate valid authentication codes and must be protected like a password.
  • Exelon utilities: the integration supports verification codes sent by email or SMS and may request periodic reauthentication.
  • PG&E: MFA through email or phone is supported, and the integration normally requires reauthentication every 180 days.

Where Opower stores the data

This detail prevents a common misunderstanding: Opower provides its historical energy data primarily as long-term statistics, not ordinary sensor entities. You may not see a sensor called “yesterday’s consumption” even though the import is working correctly.

To verify the import:

  1. Go to Developer Tools > Statistics.
  2. Search for opower.
  3. Look for consumption and, when supplied by your utility, cost, gas, return-to-grid, or compensation statistics.

Opower also creates diagnostic sensors such as Last updated and Last changed. Some utilities provide current-bill usage, current cost, or monthly forecast sensors. Other utilities omit them or leave them at zero.

Add Opower to the Home Assistant Energy dashboard

Electricity consumed from the grid

  1. Go to Settings > Dashboards > Energy.
  2. Under Electricity grid, select Add consumption.
  3. Choose the statistic named similarly to Opower [utility] elec [account] consumption.
  4. If cost data is available, choose Use an entity tracking the total costs.
  5. Select Opower [utility] elec [account] cost.
  6. Save the configuration.

Energy returned to the grid

If you have solar panels and your utility supplies export data, select Add return and choose the return and compensation statistics. Missing statistics do not necessarily indicate a fault; many providers do not expose them.

Natural gas

If the same utility also supplies gas, select Add gas source and choose the appropriate usage and cost statistics. Opower commonly reports gas in CCF. One CCF is one hundred cubic feet and is equivalent to approximately one therm.

Expected delay and update frequency

Utilities generally release usage and cost data with a delay of around 48 hours. It is normal for today and yesterday to be empty in the Energy dashboard. Home Assistant checks Opower twice per day and refreshes approximately the previous 30 days so that later utility corrections can be incorporated.

Do not immediately treat a recent gap as a broken integration. Check the utility portal first. If the reading is absent there as well, Home Assistant simply has to wait for the provider.

Option 2: Green Button

Green Button is a North American standard based on ESPI. It gives customers structured access to electricity, natural gas, or water usage data. It is not a utility and it is not a nationwide centralized database.

Green Button Download My Data (DMD)

DMD lets a customer sign in to the utility portal and manually download an XML file containing available history. Depending on the provider, readings may use 15-minute, hourly, daily, or monthly intervals.

The file can be analyzed by compatible software, but Home Assistant does not currently include one official universal importer that can upload any Green Button XML file directly into the Energy dashboard. Having a download button does not create an automatic synchronization.

Green Button Connect My Data (CMD)

CMD lets the customer authorize a third party to receive usage data automatically and later revoke that authorization. Utilities may call it “Share My Data,” “MyData,” or another product name. Using it with Home Assistant still requires an application or integration compatible with that provider’s particular implementation.

Search for your provider in the Green Button Alliance directory, which lists utilities, cooperatives, municipalities, and compatible services.

If your utility is not supported by Opower

  1. Search the utility portal for “Green Button,” “Download My Data,” “Connect My Data,” “Share My Data,” or “MyData.”
  2. Check whether Home Assistant has a provider-specific integration.
  3. Search HACS and the Home Assistant Community forum, but confirm that a project is actively maintained before providing credentials.
  4. If no utility connection exists, use a local whole-home energy meter supported by Home Assistant.
Do not confuse the sources: Opower and Green Button contain data supplied by the utility. A local meter reports what the device installed in your home measures. Both are useful, but they are not interchangeable and may use different intervals, rounding rules, and daily cutoffs.

Opower troubleshooting

Today or yesterday has no usage

This is normal. Official data usually arrives about 48 hours late and can occasionally take longer. Wait and verify whether the utility website already shows the reading.

Usage sensors are missing or always show zero

Check Developer Tools > Statistics first. Opower’s main history is not exposed as ordinary sensors. Some utilities also provide consumption but no detailed cost data.

The account number does not match the bill

This can be normal. Opower may display an internal account identifier rather than the public billing account number. By itself, that difference does not mean Home Assistant connected to someone else’s account.

Authentication or MFA error

Confirm that you can still sign in to the utility website, check the configured MFA method, and reauthenticate the integration. For TOTP failures, also verify that the Home Assistant server clock is correct.

The Energy dashboard remains empty

Confirm that you selected an Opower statistic, not one of its diagnostic sensors. The initial import can take time, and the Energy dashboard is not a real-time view.

I removed Opower, but its statistics remain

Removing the integration does not automatically delete historical statistics. If you truly want to remove them, go to Developer Tools > Statistics, search for opower, and delete them manually. Only do this if you are certain, because that history will be lost.

Privacy and security

  • Install Opower from Settings > Devices & services; it does not require an unknown custom repository.
  • Never share your utility password, MFA codes, or TOTP secret.
  • Before installing a community integration, review its code, recent activity, open issues, and credential-handling method.
  • With Green Button Connect My Data, review what data you authorize, how long access lasts, and how to revoke it.

Conclusion

For US Home Assistant users, Opower is the simplest and best-integrated route when the utility is supported. It automatically imports official history and places it where Home Assistant expects it: long-term statistics and the Energy dashboard.

Green Button is an important and widely adopted standard, but it is not yet a universal Home Assistant integration. If Opower does not list your provider, check Green Button and provider-specific integrations before turning to a local meter.
