If Alexa Guard is missing from your app, that does not mean you set up your Echo incorrectly. Amazon discontinued Guard and moved some functionality into another service. For people living in Spain, the important detail is that its successor is not automatically a service you can subscribe to here.
This guide explains what happened, what Alexa Emergency Assist is, its geographic restrictions and the useful things Alexa can still do. A smart speaker is not the same as an alarm or a purpose-built safety detector. We will not promise to recover a discontinued menu or protection the hardware does not provide.
The key points: Alexa Guard was discontinued. Emergency Assist is a different service, officially limited to the 50 US states. In Spain, routines, sensors and compatible alarm systems can address specific needs, but they do not restore Guard or independently turn an Echo into an alarm.
What happened to Alexa Guard and Guard Plus?
Guard was Amazon’s service using certain Echo capabilities for monitoring and alerts. Guard Plus added paid features. These were specific products with their own eligibility conditions, not general names for any routine that switches on a light or plays a sound.
Amazon staff explain in an official response about Guard’s retirement that it was removed in January 2024 and some features moved to Alexa Emergency Assist. The same explanation covers historical transition arrangements for existing Guard Plus subscribers.
Those transition terms are not a current offer for every account. We therefore do not repeat old subscription prices or instructions to sign up for Guard Plus in 2026. A screenshot from another region also does not establish what your Spanish account should display.
Why Guard does not appear in the app
Retirement alone explains why an old tutorial may no longer match your app. Region is another important distinction: an announcement for the US does not automatically enable a feature in Spain. A missing section is not evidence that the speaker is faulty or needs a factory reset.
If an older setup still contains Home/Away modes, lighting or automations, their presence does not prove the original Guard service remains available. Amazon described continuity for certain existing configurations. Check the actual function rather than inferring an entire monitoring service from a label.
Updating the app may improve its operation, but cannot reverse a service withdrawal. Switching the Echo’s language to English does not establish eligibility for an overseas service either. Language, physical location, emergency address and subscription are different things.
Alexa Emergency Assist: why it is not a Spanish replacement
Amazon describes Alexa Emergency Assist as a subscription with agent-assisted help and selected alert functions. It is not simply a new name for a free menu that every Echo owner can activate.
The decisive detail is in Amazon’s official Urgent Response FAQAffiliate link: Emergency Assist is only available in the 50 US states. We therefore do not present it as a subscription covering a home in Spain.
This matters if you are an international resident. An English-language account, an Echo purchased abroad or relatives in another country do not establish coverage at your Spanish address. We do not recommend changing regions or entering a fictional address to obtain assistance that depends on a real location.
Amazon.com information can explain the US product without proving Spanish availability. Before buying an assistance service, confirm where it operates and exactly what it includes. We do not convert a dollar subscription into an invented Spanish offer.
Guard, routines and alarms are different tools

Define your objective before choosing hardware. Switching on a light while away, learning that a door opened and obtaining professional assistance are three different needs. Starting with a product name rather than the desired outcome makes it easy to pay for the wrong feature.
Practical options for a home in Spain
1. Routines for lighting and everyday actions
Create a routine using a phrase or schedule and add actions your compatible devices support. For example, switch off selected lights when leaving and turn on a lamp at a chosen time. This is lighting automation, not proof that someone is monitoring the property.
- In the Alexa app, look for More > Routines, allowing for interface changes.
- Create a routine and choose a trigger actually offered to your account, such as a voice phrase or schedule.
- Add available Smart Home actions for devices already configured.
- Save and run a test while you are home.
- Check the devices’ actual state rather than relying only on Alexa’s spoken reply.

2. Sensors and alerts for specific events
For an opening, leak or movement alert, choose hardware designed for that event and check how it notifies you. Establish compatibility, hub requirements, phone notification permissions and whether the required feature involves a subscription.
Then test the whole chain: the event happens, the system registers it and the intended phone receives an alert. Seeing a device in an app does not prove remote notifications work. This is a testing principle, not a claim that every sensor can integrate with Alexa.
3. Local automation with Home Assistant
If you already use Home Assistant, you can investigate automations and an alarm panel with compatible sensors. Our Alarmo guide introduces that approach without guaranteeing professional response.
Separate local operation from remote delivery of notifications. An automation may continue locally while a phone notification depends on internet access or another service. Both need designing and testing. A domestic installation does not become a professionally monitored system merely because its dashboard shows armed and disarmed states.
4. Assistance when you need more than automation
For a vulnerable person or emergency assistance, choose a service explicitly available in Spain. Ask what happens if the person cannot speak, power fails or the connection is lost. An overseas Echo tutorial is not sufficient evidence for selecting a speaker as the only way to obtain help.
Use appropriate smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors and follow their instructions. A microphone that might recognise an alarm sound does not replace the detector responsible for detecting the hazard. Choose verified functions rather than a broad claim of smart-home protection.
Checks before relying on an automation
- Availability: does it work in Spain with your model and account?
- Event and notification: does it detect the intended event and notify the correct person?
- Connectivity and power: which parts require mains power, internet, cloud services or batteries?
- Privacy: who has access to cameras, microphones, accounts and Drop In permissions?
- Cost: what requires a subscription, and what stops when it is cancelled?
- Response: is it only an alert, or is a specific intervention service included?
You do not need to create a hazard or call 112 to test a configuration. Use manufacturers’ test modes and harmless notification tests. In a real emergency in Spain, use an appropriate way to contact 112 rather than assuming a US emergency feature applies.
Privacy: access to a room is not protection
Drop In, cameras and voice histories serve different purposes. Discuss intercom access with the people sharing the home and review authorisations. Remote access does not imply automatic detection, continuous supervision or a person who will respond to an incident.
Periodically review linked devices and permissions you no longer use. Do not enter credentials into sites promising to reactivate Guard, or subscribe to a skill based on vague security claims. Require a specific explanation of what it does, where it works and what limitations apply.

Can switching to English enable Guard?
It cannot restore a retired service or establish territorial eligibility for its replacement.
Does Alexa Emergency Assist cover Spain?
The official documentation consulted limits availability to the 50 US states. We do not recommend it as coverage for a Spanish home.
Does Alexa+ automatically bring Guard back?
No such conclusion follows from an assistant upgrade. A new Alexa experience does not guarantee a particular security subscription.
Can I use lights to suggest someone is home?

Can an Echo replace a smoke detector?
